wednesday 20 January - day 8 - on the way to Queenstown

We had a lazy start today. Didn't have to be moving b4 10am if we wanted to catch the bus to town but we decided to walk the 20 minutes with Mary and Michele along the shores of Lake Wanaka.

Wanaka town was a very quiet but lovely town that had these amazing tiles along the waters edge of the towns history. 1964 was the year I was born.

View from the town of Lake Wanaka.

Dunstan Ranges and Dunstan River. The 45 degree line was here, which is the half way point between the equator and the South Pole.

Kareo Gorge ( I hope that is its correct name and spelling) and if my memory serves me correct the Arrow river which was the richest gold river in NZ. What I found amazing and I wasn't quick enough to get a photo was this enormously high flying fox that was used to get everything from one side of the river to the other and Arrowtown was on the opposite side of the river to where most people had set up their gold claims. So every time they went to town to sell their gold they had to use the flying fox and bring back all supplies from town.

Arrowtown. A historic gold mining town. I found it far too touristy, but still quaint & pretty

The Remarkables - so named because their colour changes according to Atmospheric Conditions.

Ah Gail, these photos bring back lots of memories. We met up with friends at Wanaka, and they took us out fishing on the Lake, and we caught the biggest pink Salmon, which the Chef at the hotel cooked for us. Honestly it was a meal fit for a King - still remember it clearly. Loved Queenstown too - it snowed whilst we were thre. Just magic.
